Aikido is a self-defense method originating in Japan in the early part of the 20th century. The techniques of Aikido center upon but are not restricted to throws and hold-downs using joint manipulation and the momentum of the attacker's body.
Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba, a well-known practicioner of the classical martial arts. Ueshiba, also known as O-Sensei to Aikidoists, was a deeply religious man who decided to develop a system which could allow a person to defend himself without necessarily causing great harm to his attacker, thus solving the gentle person's dilemma over the need for self-defense in an ungentle society.
Aikido then, is a versatile art giving us, on one hand, the capacity to inflict tremendous damage to our attackers, while, on the other hand, stressing the use of the least force necessary to defend oneself.
Aikido is not a sport like Judo or Kickboxing nor, does it involve attacks like Karate or Kung Fu. Aikido is strictly self-defense. The people you train with are your practice partners, not your opponents. In Aikido physical relaxation is encouraged so there is a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Schools of Aikido vary widely in orientation. At South Jersey Aikido Academy, we focus on practical self defense. We believe that aikido is a Living Art so we continually strive to improve the effectiveness of what we teach. Wat works, we keep; what doesn't we drop.
